Abdominoplasty is an aesthetic surgical technique that reshapes the abdominal wall, which loosens for various reasons. Such complaints are usually common in women after pregnancy or can occur in men and women due to excessive weight loss or aging. When skin loosening occurs, the abdominal skin takes on a wrinkled appearance and accumulates on the abdomen or groin. The loosening of the abdominal wall is caused by the part that divides the abdominal muscles into two halves. In this case, the navel protrudes forward, and flatulence occurs. Even if the person’s body weight is normal, the abdomen looks like bloated or the person seems to be pregnant.
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and usually lasts about 3-4 hours. The excess fat layer in the abdomen is removed by this method and the middle space between the abdominal muscles is sewn together like buttoning up a jacket. This method works like an internally applied corset and shapes the abdominal muscles. Then the skin is pulled over the abdomen, stretched out, and in this way a smooth and tight abdomen is shaped.
This surgical method is definitely not a method of weight reduction. Patients undergoing this method should have the ideal weight or should be close to their ideal weight. Fat deposits in overweight people are not found under the skin, but in the abdomen. This method is therefore not suitable for overweight people. Those who have previously undergone abdominal surgery and are smokers, are no suitable candidates for this method. Women who plan to become pregnant in the future should know that the aesthetic result achieved by this method will be lost due to the pregnancy.
The patient stays in hospital one night after the operation and can leave the hospital on the next day, as it is possible to walk one day after the surgery. Due to new techniques and developments in abdominal surgery, the patient leaves the hospital almost painless. Pain that can occur postoperatively can easily be relieved with mild painkillers. The medical dressing is removed approx. 3-4 days after the operation and the patient can return to work approx. 7-10 days after the operation. After this procedure, the patient should wear a corset that supports the abdomen for 6 weeks and accelerates the healing process.
